Australia and New Zealand have been making beautiful noise in the wine world, for some time now. The spectacular Shiraz, and Grenache that took the U.S. by storm, have shown how really good these great reds can be. When most people think of Australia, Kangaroos and the Outback come to mind. When they think of Aussie wine, it’s the ubiquitous “Yellow Tail.”
Come join us for Aussie and New Zealand wines that BRING THE THUNDER!.....You know, wines that when you taste them, you simply say WOW! We will begin with the cold, refreshing Marlboro Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. These beauties feature, Pineapple, Grapefruit, Cut Grass and Lemon with a bracing acidity that just makes you want to drink more, and more. The smooth creamy tropical fruit of South Australian Chardonnay is particularly rich and delicious. These wines feature the perfect blend of Bananas, passion fruit, butterscotch and vanilla, with just the right amount of Oak that set these Chards apart from anywhere else in the world. Pinot Noir from California has become very popular since the movie Sideways featured these great light bodied reds. New Zealand has the perfect climatic conditions for great Pinots. These wines stand up to not only California, but French Burgundy, whose root stock is planted in this fascinating country; producing these great New Zealand Pinot Noirs. Barossa Valley produces arguably the greatest Shiraz and Grenache in the world.
We will taste the soft, smooth Grenache that sets the stage for our featured wine…..the much anticipated 2008 Mollydooker “Boxer.” Australia suffered from a severe drought in 2008, resulting in Mollydooker declassifying its Velvet Glove ($175), Carnival of Love, ($100) and Enchanted Path ($90.00). These grapes were used in the blending of the ’08 Boxer, resulting in a very, very good Shiraz. (92 points WS) The demand for this wine far outpaced its production, so this tasting may be your only chance to taste this truly great Shiraz and example of “THUNDER DOWN UNDER.”
